Well in the latest version they are using SQL server express edition.

Officially

Microsoft POS 2009 uses Microsoft SQL 2008 Express
Microsoft RMS is shipped with Microsoft SQL 2005 Express but also works with 2008

I think clubbing your generic product with a free database like express helps you keep your costs lower and competitive.
