I have a small retail shop in So. Cal. Probably 2000 or so different products. Is the Microsoft product overkill? I am straight up 100% cash and carry. No funny stuff. Runniong 2 registers and a backroom machine. I haven't purchased any equipment yet so no limits there eiter. Thank you very much for any help or guidance.

It is very good, but would be overkill for what you are doing. Then again, you could grow into it...

I think you might need to consult any POS systems provider, as you said you run a small business MS POS is much bigger product to go for so consult any POS system provider and develop a customized POS.

Since you have just started out why don't you first go for the free open source system?

Well you are right but then you can not expect an open source system to completely replicate the sophistication of a good commercial system.

You can try out php POS, it has been used by quite a few people and they vouch for it.
