Micros database integration
« on: February 01, 2012, 10:14:43 AM »
Hey all!

I am trying to build a plug-in that goes directly to the Micros SQL database (although I've heard some versions use Sybase?) and extracts files of interest.  I'm doing this for a senior design project at UT Austin, and having difficulty coming up with a test bed, trial software, or database table layout/schema. I'm trying to build a real-time accounting software for the restaurant industry that pulls transaction details from the database in regular intervals: transaction data being item detail, timestamp, revenue, etc and regular pulls being more than just the daily grind file that's produced...probably every 15 minutes or so.

I've called Micros but they don't know if they can help me unless I spend 50k on an API...which is way more than my professor and I can afford.  I guess I have questions that I'm hoping you guys can answer for me :)

1. What is the best way to map Micros databases and are there multiple versions I need to be concerned with mapping?
2. Will I need a testbed or trial software to really make this thing work, and if so is there a way to get it for el cheapo or, even better, the student price of free?
3. Are there any people that have already done this and might be able to help us shorten the learning curve?

And I keep getting booted off Tek-Tips for being a student, so I thought I would clarify: this is NOT a homework problem but a senior project.  We are encouraged to interact with industry and talk with real people - and our professors fully support this.

Thanks in advance!
Dillon

Hmm, interesting. I would speak with Micros, Not support but a Product Manager. See if they can offer a Lab for you and barter for it. Also, depends on where you live. If you are in the Las Vegas area you might be able to talk to them. Another bet would be to find a 3rd party Company that supports Micros and include them in on the Senior Project and end results.

Thanks Cfreiling. I've contacted a lot of the regional offices of Micros with no success. They have demo software (RES 5 I think) but won't help me out.
