Many point of sale companies say that their software can do grocery but many of them cannot, or simply do not have the capability to take into account all of the anomalies that are in grocery.  Here is a solution that was designed by grocers for grocers 16 years ago and is truly specialized:

I have been in the support and installation side of Grocery POS for close to 30 years. We use 'Logivision' and have found it very reliable. www.logivision.com

Wanted a grocery store POS that is Mac based with weight scale capability and barcode scanning. Only one that can run a scale at the checkout I've found is Sixth Sense. Spoke with them, am very cheered by my initial discussion. Our small grocery store is currently on a windows based system that is nothing but headaches and getting worse. Sixth sense was a little hard to unearth on the web. They need to implement some keywords on their webpage to make the most of their competitive advantage: they are the only mac based POS system with checkout weight scale interface capability that i can find. I look forward to our transition to a mac os based POS where we sell food by weight.
