Common fields to identify a unique transaction
« on: September 06, 2010, 01:14:29 PM »
I was wondering if there is any combination of fields that one could use on a receipt that would help uniquely identify a transaction in a POS system across multiple POS types (retail, restaurants, etc.  Could you use register number/terminal id, time, date and amount?  Or is there an easier way to do it?

Usually all of those you mention along with  simple receipt number signify the individual transaction/sale.

do all sales receipts have the receipt number on it?  if so, is it possible just to use the receipt number as the unique identifier rather than the other fields?

Yes, the receipt number would be the unique identifier.

I collected a few receipts over the past few days and noticed that not all of them have a unique transaction number printed.  Is this just a setting that can be made on the POS system to have it print the unique transaction number?  Also, in the absence of a unique transaction number, what fields on the receipt would you suggest I use to identify the transaction and match it to the transaction in the POS database?

Most modern receipts print the transaction in a barcode font instead of a legible font.

Yes exactly they are all printed in barcode format.
