But that does not seem like a software specifically designed for carpet shops. Does anyone know any other more suitable software for this purpose?

I would like to know about a software that is an open source customizable system. That is to say, a point of sale system which was released to the market as an open source system which would allow anyone to adapt it to any particular retail shop needs by means of a programmer.

I want it to be customizable so that I can modify the source code and customize it like I can do for example with wordpress. Is there anything like that in point of sale (POS) software?

Well as far as open source systems are concerned you can go for php pos, it is free of charge also. Although it is not as advanced as some of the good commercial POS systems but there are lots of scope for customization.
Then there is openbravo and i believe they have got a free edition also.
