Where is OS stored on workstation? 3700, ws4
« on: May 31, 2010, 11:52:22 AM »
On the Micros 3700 WS4, is the operating system stored locally, or loaded from the server?

If locally, is it stored on the CF card, or on the Disk on Chip?

A pin on our Disk on Chip broke, and I was wondering if purchasing a new, blank Disk on Chip would require some further formatting.

In other words, my question is:

What data is stored on the Disk on Chip, and what data is stored on the CF card?

Thanks a bunch in advance!!

The OS is local, it uses MS Windows Embedded. It is stored on a 4 GB Flash Drive.

Thanks for the help, Henny!

So it is stored locally, but this workstation does not have a 4gb flash drive inside it.

The only forms of storage in the unit are a 32mb Disk on Chip, and a 128mb CF card.

Here's a photo (sorry for the blurriness, but you can see the CF card under the metal plate, and the DoC in the center):

Hmm, thought they were all the same. The OS on your unit must be on the 128 MB CF card?!? Seems awefully small though....

Ok, so another quick question....

What is stored on the DoC?

I accidentally broke a pin on it, and was wondering if simply purchasing a fresh, new one and installing it would be OK.

Thanks again, Henny!

Sorry Henny, but you are not quite right.

First of all, while the OS is indeed local, it is stored on the DOC.  The workstation's configuration settings, storefront software and other "personality" traits are stored on the CF card.  Secondly, the vast majority of micros workstations use CF cards smaller than 4GB -in fact I have yet to see a WS4/LX/WS5 use anything larger than 2GB, and they most commonly use between 128MB and 256MB

There are micros suppliers that resale the DOC pre-loaded with WinCE and the micros-specific driver files, but I can't recall any names at the moment.
