Setup Suggestions for Jewelry Store
« on: January 22, 2010, 07:48:10 AM »
 Hello!

Currently right now our store runs Quickbooks Pro only. We are going to be moving over to POS and im not sure how I will setup my store. We sell Jewelry, Belt Buckles, Leather Goods, Native and Western Art. The majority of our product we own, but we do have about 6 artists whom we deal consignment with. We also have a very large website. So I need to make sure I setup my store and departments all correctly. So lets start with the website

Currently right now we will buy a new item for example a piece of jewelry we give it a SKU of SNNER89, at the time we don't know if it will for sure end up online depends on if we have the time to photograph it and so forth. Then one day we decide we have the time to take a photo of that product and put it online, so now we add something to our sku for website inventory purposes SNNER89_BT84,  right now in quickbooks pro when we sell it we only enter SNNER89, the BT84 is for hand inventory purpose, but of course we have to hand inventory everything to keep up with the website. We have about 1300 products online. So how could I set this up so that some day I can just connect my web and quickbooks using something like webgillity and update my stock online as opposed to doing everything by hand. *note - we have some items on our website we do not sell in the store for example jewelry item SSB904, we sell online, but dont keep in stock, if someone orders it we order it from the artist and then receive it and ship it right back out. Then we have some items in our store we don't sell online, and some items which we sell in our store and also offer online. Another note some items are one of a kind so if we sell it in the store it must come offline. Some items can be remade, so if we sell it in the store I will leave it online and if someone buys it online we will have it made for them.

Consignment

So as I said we have about 6 Artists whom we only deal consignment with. Right now our setup is very bad. We enter a bill for the artist add the product so its in the computer, and then pay of the bill when a product sells, well thats messy and that to be paid huge bill is showing up on our P&L which hurts us. Then in order to find out if we sold anything we pull a report on there skus once a month. So I was thinking maybe we need to do Purchase Orders and receive the product when it sells? But does consignment need to be its own department? Some artist have same terms like 33.34% to us other 40% to us and some 50% to us. I would love to be able to say hmm wonder if any of Geoff Browns jewelry has sold and boom pull and accurate report.

Okay that was super long, but more info the more help you can give, let me know if I am missing any important details.
