customize a POS system

I have very little knowledge of POS systems. Please tell me the feasibility and level of difficulty involved in this idea:

I would like to create a way to integrate a rewards program into different restaurant businesses. However, in order to make it seamless with their point of sale transaction I will need to customize their POS software to allow them to enter in a customer # for a transaction. Then, the system will send those customer #'s, along with their associated transaction amount, up to a database on the internet where the customer's account will be updated.

I'd like to integrate this into the POS systems of VARIOUS restaurants yet I don't know whether various POS systems follow a certain set of standards that I can take advantage of to customize their POS software.

P.S. I'd like to also integrate a barcode scanner to scan rewards cards

Wow, you would have to modify the source code FOR SURE if you wanted it to be integrated. Have you checked with Aloha or NextPOS to see if they offer something like this?

I agree with the previous post... there is no way to do this other than a custom modification into each restaurant's POS system.  It fairly safe to asssume that this is cost prohibitive. 

It might be easier to build this custom capabiltiy once into a handheld of some sort and have your member restaurants handle the points reware seperately.  I know this is not idea, but it seems far more reasonable than the other option.
