Hey all!
I am trying to build a plug-in that goes directly to the Aloha flat file database (although I've heard some versions now use SQL?) and extracts files of interest. I'm doing this for a senior design project at UT Austin, and having difficulty coming up with a test bed, trial software, or database table layout/schema. I'm trying to build a real-time accounting software for the restaurant industry that pulls transaction details from the database in regular intervals: transaction data being item detail, timestamp, revenue, etc and regular pulls being more than just the daily grind file that's produced...probably every 15 minutes or so.
I've called Radiant but they don't know if they can help me unless I spend 25k on an API...which is way more than my professor and I can afford. I guess I have questions that I'm hoping you guys can answer for me

1. What is the best way to map Aloha databases and are there multiple versions I need to be concerned with mapping?
2. Will I need a testbed or trial software to really make this thing work, and if so is there a way to get it for el cheapo or, even better, the student price of free?
3. Are there any people that have already done this and might be able to help us shorten the learning curve?
And I keep getting booted off Tek-Tips for being a student, so I thought I would clarify: this is NOT a homework problem but a senior project. We are encouraged to interact with industry and talk with real people - and our professors fully support this.
Thanks in advance!
Dillon
